What is Whisky ?

Well, SCOTCH WHISKY can only be produced in Scotland, and although several attempts have made in different parts of the world to reproduce the same result, it is now illegal to sell any substitute bearing the name Scotch Whisky, if it were not produced in Scotland.

Where does the name of Whisky come from ?

Hundreds of years ago in Europe there was a practice of distilling wine to produce brandy, the product being  known as " aqua vitae ", the Water of Life. In the Highlands of Scotland where Gaelic was the language that was spoken aqua vitae was roughly translated into Uisge beatha, and this term was eventually shortened to Uisge, and then corrupted to form the word Whisky.

Through a process of Government taxation and a tradition of illicit Whisky making, the Highlands of Scotland have now become the centre of Whisky production. However, the Whisky that these distilleries produce is termed MALT Whisky.

Grain whisky is produced at large distilleries, the output of which is used to provide the bulk of the blended whiskies on sale throughout the world. I will try and concentrate on the Malt Whisky production, as that is where the quality and mystic of Scotch Whisky lies.
