CLAN KEITH

This is the tartan of Clan Keith and Austin.

This sett ( pattern ) is based on the pattern recorded by Wilson of Bannockburn
in 1819 as ' No. 75 or Austin '.

D. W. Stewart recorded the version reproduced here in his book,
Old and Rare Scottish Tartans,
in which he wrote ' it is included in every complete early collection'.
It does not, however, appear in the Cockburn Collection nor th 1827 list of the Collection of the Highland Society.
The earliest attribution is, therefore, given to Wilson.

The Keiths were a powerful Celtic family, who held the hereditory office of great marischal of Scotland. They are associated with Dunottar Castle, near Stonehaven.
