BEST MUSEUM

 NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SCOTLAND,
Edinburgh, 0131-247 4422 www.nms.ac.uk

Starting below ground level, the visitor is introduced to the geological origins of Scotland, and then prehistoric men and women start their role of bringing agriculture to the countryside. Although not the first settlers, the Romans and their arms and monuments play an important part in this level of the museum. Moving up through the floors takes you through the various ages of history, on to the industrial revolution, the many emigrations to the new world and eventually into modern times. Well worth a visit - or two, or three.

 THE PEOPLE'S PALACE,
Glasgow, 0141-271 2962 www.glasgowmuseums.com

Set in the middle of Glasgow Green, this museum charts the development of the history of trade unionism and the labour movement, highlighting many of the protests that have dominated Scottish history. Great use of oral history and old cinema footage. Puts the modern day into perspective.

 ABERDEEN MARITIME MUSEUM,
01224-337 700 www.aagm.co.uk

This museum plays an important role in telling the story of how the seas around Scotland's shores have helped mould its history, civilisation and culture. Not just about boats, it also helps to show how North Sea oil and gas helped dramatically change the destiny of all of Scotland - and particularly the North-east.

 DISCOVERY POINT ANTARCTIC MUSEUM,
Dundee, 01382-201 245 www.rrsdiscovery.com

An excellent visitor and interpretive centre for the Discovery vessel now permanently sited conveniently close to the centre of Dundee and its railway station. A great way to find out why this beautiful city by the Tay is described as the "city of discovery". Watch out for the exhibition's excellent finale, in which modern-day film and technology brings the ship to life.

 INVERNESS MUSEUM,
01463-237 114 www.invernessmuseum.com

Conveniently located at the start of the Great Glen Way and provides an excellent introduction to the history of the Highlands. Puts Nessie in perspective.
