YOUTH HOSTELS
The Scottish Youth Hostel Association (SYHA) has
more than 70 hostels spread across Scotland.
Together they offer more than 4,500 beds.
Visitors spend a combined total of about 500.000 nights an SYHA bunk
houses each generating year, generating £6 million.
Around 60% of guests come from abroad and it is estimated
that the SYHA contributes more than £20 million to
the Scottish economy each year.
Its most northerly mainland hostels are in Durness, Tongue and John
o' Groats, while the association also has hostels on
Orkney and Shetland, the most northerly being
the accommodation in Lerwick.
In the south, the SYHA has hostels in Minnigaff. Kendon and
Kirk Yetholm.
The SYHA was founded in 1931 and currently has more
than 30,000 members. Its largest facility is the £10 milllion Edinburgh
Central hostel in Leith Walk.
