ABERFELDY DISTILLERY
Aberfeldy Distillery, situated in the magnificent Perthshire countryside,
plays an important part in the story of one ofwhisky's most famous families
- the Dewars.
The original John Dewar had been born close to the pretty Tayside town
of Aberfeldy and he was one of the first of the enterprising wine and spirit
merchants to bottle brands of blended whisky under his own name.
Later when his sons inherited his flourishing business, they decided to
build their own distillery near his home to provide malt whisky to satisfy
demand for the Dewar's blend. In 1898 the site provided the perfect location:
barley from local farms, an abundance of pure, clear water and a railway
to bring in supplies and ship out casks of whisky.
Attractively laid out, the distillery has been expanded over the years
but still retains a 'turn of the century' charm. Aberfeldy's strong links
with the railway are also being recreated as a small section of the old
siding has been restored, complete with an original steam engine - a 'puggie'
- which used to pull whisky wagons in the Highlands.
Aberfeldy's own 15 year old malt whisky is a fine dram in its own right
but most of its production still provides the heart of Dewar's White Label
- the best-selling blended whisky in the USA.
NATURE TRAIL
Having learned something of the mystery of distilling and tasted the final
product, steep yourself in the atmosphere of the area and enjoy a peaceful
walk in the native woodland which surrounds the distillery. A short nature
trail leads from the car park and takes you across the burn, which supplies
our cooling water, and through a small wood of ash, willow, hazel and oak.
The circuit takes about 20 minutes of gentle walking and, if you are lucky,
you may see some sign of the local red squirrel whose image appears on
the Aberfeldy label.
