HOLYROOD PALACE,
EDINBURGH.

At the end of Edinburgh's Royal Mile,
one of the most famous and historic streets in the world,
stands the PALACE of HOLYROOD,
Her Majesty The Queen's offical residence in Scotland.

The Abbey at Holyrood was founded by King David 1 in 1128,
who according to legend witnessed a cross or ' rood ' on the site,
appearing miraculously between the antlers of an attacking stag.

Set against the spectacular backdrop of Arthur's Seat,
Holyrood evolved from a medieval fortress into a baroque palace
and has been a favoured royal residence since the reign of Queen Victoria.

Today you can visit the Royal Apartments,
an extensive suite of rooms which epitomises
the elegance and grandeur of this ancient and noble house.

The historic tower apartments of Mary Queen of Scots'
are steeped in intrigue and sorrow.
These personal, intimate rooms,
where she lived following her return from France in 1561,
witnessed the murder of David Rizzio,
her favourite secretary,
by her jealous husband Lord Darnley and his accomplices.
