GLENFINNAN MONUMENT,
on the ' ROAD TO THE ISLES '.

It was at the head
of Loch Sheil, on 19th August, 1745, that Prince Charles Edward Stuart raised his standard and started his campaign to restore the House of Stuart to the throne.

The Glenfinnan Monument was erected in 1815 by Alexander MacDonald of Glenaladale as a tribute to the clansmen who had fought alongside Bonnie Prince Charlie. It was designed by James Gillespie Graham.

A narrow staircase leads visitors up to a small viewing platform at the top of the monument, offering views of the surrounding glen.

The tower was presented to the National Trust for Scotland in 1935 by Sir Walter Blount, who owned it, and on behalf of the trustees of Glenaladale Estates and the roman Catholic Diocese of Argyll and the Isles.

The Glenfinnan monument's visitor centre tells the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the '45 rebellion.

Nearby is the Glenfinnan Railway Viaduct, which was used in the Harry Potter films.
