on Friday, 30th January 1998.

Important Old Master Paintings.

Full-lenght portrait of John Cunninghame, 13th Laird of Craigends,

by Sir Henry Raeburn.

Painted between 1805 and 1810

Previously in a private collection.

Sotheby's quote " The composition of the Cunninghame

portrait illustrates many of Raeburn's best characteristics.

The pose gives Cunninghame a heroic appearance

setting him above just an average landowner"

The estimated value is around $350,000

John Cunninghame was the son of

Captain William Cunninghame and his wife Margaret,

owners of the substantial estate at Craigends,

about 12 miles west of Glasgow,

which had been in the family since 1479.
