![]() " JAMES INNES-KER, 5th Duke
of Roxburghe. " Oil on canvas 78 x 60 inches The Duke of Roxburghe. Sir James Innes of Innes, who succeeded to that baronetcy in 1764, was, in 1805, one of the claimants to the Roxburghe titles, being the male heir of the first Earl of Roxburghe, through his great-grandmother. The House of Lords finally decided in his favour in 1812, and it is thought that this painting dates from this date. He married a Mary Wray of a Lincolnshire family in 1769, who died childless in 1807. Eight days after her death, Sir James re-married to Harriet Charlewood of Windlesham in Surrey. By this time he liked to be known as Innes-Ker. They had one son, James Henry, born in 1816, who succeeded as duke on the death of his father at Floors Castle, the seat of the Dukes of Roxburghe, on 19th July 1823 in this Gallery Help find these
