Niel Gow

" NIEL GOW "
( 1727 - 1807 )

Oil on canvas 48 1/2 X 38 1/2 inches

Scottish National Portrait Gallery,

Edinburgh.

Son of a weaver, he was born at Inver, in Perthshire.

He was a fiddle player of note from an early age.

His patrons included the Duke of Atholl and the Duchess of Gordon, and his reels, hornpipes, jigs and strathspeys were in great demand.

He published a Collection of Strathspey Reels in 1784, which had enormous sales.

There are copies of this painting, one of which hangs in the Great Hall of Blair Castle, along with several relics of the fiddler.

It is thought that the painting of Gow's tartan trews is one of the earlist recordings of tartan
