" David Deuchar " ( 1743 - 1808 ) Watercolour on ivory 2 3/8 X 1 7/8 inches National Gallery of Scotland This miniature is thought to Raeburn's earliest work, and probably dates from 1773. David Deuchar was the person initially encouraged Henry Raeburn to stop making jewellery and become a painter, so the story goes. He was a goldsmith, seal engraver, and amateur etcher. Born at Kinnell in Forfarshire, the son of a farmer, who had become a lapidary 1745, setting up a lapidary mill at Croft an Righ, near Holyroodhouse.
