![]() " JOHN CLERK of Eldin, Lord Eldin " (1757 - 1832) Oil on canvas 50 x 40 inches Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh John Clerk was born in 1757, the eldest son of John Clerk of Eldin and Susanna Adam. He was the cousin of Sir John Clerk of Penicuik, whose famous double portrait of him and his wife, by Raeburn, can be viewed in this Gallery. John Clerk was admitted to the faculty of advocates in 1785, and quickly rose in his profession. He became solicitor-general in 1806. In 1823, he was appointed a senator of the College Justice, and took the title Lord Eldin. He was not suited to be a judge, and he resigned in 1828 He died in 1832 Help find these
