WILLIAM CLUNES " Oil on canvas 25 x 59 inches National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh. He joined the 50th (West Kent) foot regiment in 1790, and became a lieutenant in 1794 and a captain in 1787. From 1807 he served in the Peninsula under Sir John Moore. He was promoted major in July 1809 in the 54th (West Norfolk) regiment, the uniform of which he wears in the portrait. His name does not appear in the Army List after 1812. The portrait is therefore presumed to have been painted in the years 1809 to 1812. Help
