Sir Duncan Campbell of Barcaldine

" Sir DUNCAN CAMPBELL of Barcaldine "
( 1786 - 1842 )

Oil on canvas 30 x 40 inches

The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco,

Roscoe and Margaret Oakes Collection.

Duncan Campbell was the eldest son of
Alexander Campbell of Barcaldine and Glenure, an advocate, and Mary Campbell

The portrait is thought to have been painted around 1812, when the sitter was a lieutenant
in the 3rd Regiment of Foot guards
and a captain in the Army.

He served at Copenhagen in 1801
and took part in the British seizure of the
island of Walcheren in Zealand in 1809.

In the same year he was with the
British and Spanish forces, under Wellesley,
who defeated the French at Talavera de la Reina
in the Peninsular Wars.

He married Elizabeth,
daughter of James Dennistoun of Dennistoun and Margaret Dreghorn, in 1815.

In later life he became Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of Argyll,
and a magistrate.

He was created a baronet in 1831.
