Scotland is the country where game of golf originated, and where the world's oldest golf course is,

 at Musselburgh,

just outside Edinburgh. 

King James 2nd played golf on the beach links at Leith, now part of Edinburgh. 

These links still exist today, but not as a golf course, 

just as a public park.

 There are over 400 golf courses in Scotland, some very exclusive, some publically owned, but most are owned by golf clubs, and are available to be played on with few restrictions.

 Golfing is very popular in Scotland, with people from all walks of life playing the game.

With many courses having different names from their surrounding area or town of location, we have provided a cross reference of courses to locations, which is how details of the courses are displayed.
