Shoe Laces

There are some things that children have problems with, and one of those things is tying shoe laces. I have tried and tried with my daughter, but she doesn’t seem too interested in figuring out how to do it. She starts school soon, so this is something that she should do. I prefer that she has shoes with laces, but others buy her shoes with Velcro. I don’t care for it so I don’t buy it on sneakers, but there are other things, like sandals, that usually have it.

I debate on how to teach her to tie her shoe laces. I know that many children learn with the bunny ear method. This means they form two loops, one in each hand, and they then tie them together. It does seem to be the easier way to learn, but I don’t think that the shoe laces stay tied as long or nearly as securely as the other way. My husband ties her shoes this way, and they are always soon loose and dragging on the ground when he does it. I don’t want to seem petty so I just tie them my way when they come undone.

I learned to use the single loop method of tying shoe laces. One loop is form and the other lace is wrapped around it and then pulled though. This is how I have always done it and my shoes always stay tied. It is harder to master though. I guess if I learned it when I was little she can too. I do worry that she will be tripping all over her shoe laces while in school. I know the teachers don’t have time to retie shoes all day long, and that she should be able to do it on her own.

Sometimes the size of the shoe laces makes a difference. Some children have an easier time if they use the wider laces, but some can’t handle them. If your child is having problems, perhaps they need a wider or a thinner set of shoe laces to work with while learning. Even if a child seems to wear a lot of shoes with Velcro they still need to learn to tie up the laces. They will eventually need shoes with laces for sports and gym class. Velcro just won’t do for those things. It might be okay for everyday things, but the shoes will become loose during physical activity and children can get hurt that way.
