JOHN MUIR (1838-1914) CONSERVATIONIST
He was born in Dunbar where he early acquired a great love of nature. His family emigrated to Wisconsin where he continued to be a naturalist but also enjoyed factory and city life. He attended the University of Wisconsin and shortly afterwards suffered an accident to one eye. To recover from this he set off wandering through the States. He visited the Yosemite, California and Alaska. After his marriage he settled to horticulture. He published the story of his wandering in several volumes. Through his efforts several national parks, including the Yosemite, were established. |
