Sir Alexander Mackenzie (1764-I820) EXPLORER Born in Stornoway, Lewis, he emigrated at an early age to America and worked as a fur trapper and trader at Lake Athabasca. With his brother and several companions he made a long journey by canoe, in 1789, down river from the Great Slave Lake reaching to the Arctic Ocean. The river bears his name. The journey home was very wearisome and winter had begun before the party returned to camp. His two
journeys of 1792 and 1793 were more hazardous,crossing the Rockies |
