THE VILLAGE OF EAST LINTON, East Lothian. EAST LINTON is a pleasant village just off the A1 road, about 25 miles east of Edinburgh. Nearby is Preston Mill, a watermill which is probably the last of its kind still in working order in Scotland. It is cared for by the National Trust for Scotland, as is the Phantassie Doo'cot just over the River Tyne. A few miles away are the ruins of Hailes Castle, which dates from the 13th and 15th centuries. Mary, Queen of Scots was brought here by the Earl of Bothwell, her third husband, on her flight from Borthwick Castle in 1567. |
