EDINBURGH  CASTLE

v

in EDINBURGH .

( A ' Historic Scotland ' site ).

This most famous of castles dominates Scotland's capital and gives stunning views of the city and countryside.

St Margaret's Chapel; the enormous 500-year old siege cannon Mons Meg; the Great Hall; the royal palace and the Scottish National War Memorial are here together with the highly acclaimed "Honours of the Kingdom" exhibition which traces the history of Scotland's Crown Jewels and culminates in a visit to the Crown Room housing the Scottish Regalia and the Stone of Destiny.

A new shop offers an exclusive line of specially designed jewellery.

The Vaults were where foreign prisoners-of-war were held, particularly those captured the wars with France in the 18th and 19th centuries.

A free audio tour is available just inside the castle.

Courtesy vehicle for disabled visitors (sponsored by the Bank of Scotland).

Restaurant offering self and table service.

If you wish only to visit the Scottish National War Memorial ( housed within the Castle ), you may do so for free. Just make your wishes known at the ticket office, they will then summon a warden who will escort you direct to the Memorial, and then back to the castle entrance once you have finished.
All a bit of a pain, but I'm sure that it gets up their noses more than the visitor's !

How to get there:-

In EDINBURGH, reached from the top of the Royal Mile, or from Princes Street via The Mound ( next to the Art Galleries ).

Car Parking:- During the summer, from about July onwards, preperations for the Edinburgh Military Tattoo mean that the Esplanade ( the area in front of the castle which doubles as a parade ground and a car park ) is closed for car parking. This is because the grandstands have to be constructed for the Tattoo, which is held in August. As car parking is well nigh impossible during the peak summer months, I recommend that you do not attempt to park in this area. Illegal parking puts your vehicle at risk of being impounded by the police.

Tel:- 44 (0) 131 225 9846.
