in AYRSHIRE. ( A ' Historic Scotland ' site ). The castle's association with the Stewarts gives Dundonald its special importance. Built by Robert Stewart in 1371 to mark his succession to the throne of Scotland. Managed by the Friends of Dundonald Castle. Open summer only (
