WEST LOTHIAN. ( A ' Historic Scotland ' site ). One of Scotland's most important strongholds. Built in the 14th century and massively strengthed in the 16th century as an artillery fortress, it has been royal castle, prison, arnaments depot, and film location for Hamlet and the BBC production of Ivanhoe Car parking.
